After wrapping up the previous project successfully, you scheduled a dinner with the investors. As Li Zeyan, a character from 恋与制作人五人组的手铐小插曲:甜蜜又搞笑的日常, had set a precedent that you don’t drink outside due to your past collaborations with Huari, no one dared to press you for drinks openly. However, the unavoidable drinking culture at the table still made the evening drag on.
Two hours had passed since the dinner started, leaving you with a sore back and waist, yet the others showed no sign of stopping. You had to prepare to stay until midnight and decided to get up to touch up your makeup in the restroom. Just then, Li Zeyan’s call came like a lifeline, easing your tired mind a little. “Hmm, it’s not over yet, should be soon... Are you still at Huari?” “Me? I’m having dinner with Mr. Chen and the others today, Yueyue and the rest are here too.” “I didn’t drink! Absolutely not... Well, just a little... Okay, a few glasses of red wine.”
You knew your alcohol tolerance well—once a lightweight, now you could handle a round at social events. The red wine you drank today shouldn’t have made you disoriented. “You really aren’t thinking clearly,” a soft sigh and slightly angry rebuke came from the phone. “Do you remember the wine’s brand?” “Ah? The brand?” You paused, recalling, “It seems to have a white label with red and black patterns.” “Hey! What are you coming for? You’re so busy, I...” Before you could finish, Li Zeyan hung up, leaving you confused as the busy tone rang. He told you to stay in the restroom and not move.
In that moment of distraction, a flush quickly spread across your cheeks. You burped, propping yourself on the sink to look in the mirror. Your eyes were hazy, and even your shoulders had turned pink in just a short time, like the strawberry shortcake he bought home a few days ago. Is this wine’s aftereffect so strong? You leaned forward, lost in thought, when Yueyue called softly outside: “Boss, are you okay? They’re asking about you.” “I’m fine, how about you?” “I’m okay, but boss, did drinking so much make you uncomfortable?”
A strange thought crossed your mind, and you tensed up, realizing those people had been subtly targeting you. Only you and Yueyue were women there; Yueyue was fiery and refused most drinks, so they turned to you... But why? Everyone was in the industry—something happening would be hard to explain to the public and hurt the company’s stock price. Mr. Chen was collaborating with you for the first time, and your company was invested by Huari—they should respect that, so no one would gain from targeting you. Unless... someone wanted to use you to attack Huari. With that, everything made sense. You waved Yueyue off: “Tell them I’m on a call. Also, go back and say the company has an emergency, I told you to leave first.”
Yueyue: “Me leave first?” “Yes, take a friend with you, message me when you get home.” Yueyue understood immediately and shook her head: “Boss!” “Listen to me, it’ll be okay.” You brushed back sweat-soaked hair, smiling sarcastically: “They don’t have the guts.” You lingered in the restroom for over ten minutes; it was nearly midnight, probably only your table left. Outside, leather shoes clicked slowly, stopping at the door. Your lips were chapped from drinking, tension spreading through you, temples throbbing. If Li Zeyan didn’t come, you had to save yourself... You grabbed a mop behind you, voice hoarse as you pretended to call: “Hello, Mr. Li? Yes, it’s me.”
You tried to calm down, raising your voice: “The proposal? Alright, I’ll revise it tonight.” “I’m dining with Mr. Chen, almost done. Haven’t you rested?” Unsure if the person left, you continued: “Yes, I’ll be late, can’t be helped.” No sound outside, so you bit your lip, holding back tears: “Okay, wait for me.” Putting down the phone, you took deep breaths, knuckles white from gripping the mop.
Two soft knocks on the door. His voice came through: “It’s me, Li Zeyan.” Before he finished, you opened the door and rushed over, wind in your ears as everything faded except him. He stepped back but held you steady, patting your back: “It’s okay, I’m here.” “Woo...” Too委屈 to speak, you sobbed. His arms tightened, then he let go, bending to kiss your forehead gently: “Better?” You nodded, staring at your shoes: “I... I won’t drink outside again.” “Didn’t say you can’t. This was an accident, not your fault.” “What about Mr. Chen and them?” Li Zeyan changed the subject: “Tired? I’ll take you somewhere.”
The alcohol was gone, your mind clear. You shook your head then nodded: “Not tired.” In the car, he lowered the seat, used makeup remover on you, changed your heels to flats. The scenery blurred as you fell asleep, a light but warm sleep. Dreaming of mountains, stars, forests, birds—like a lifetime returning to the start, with him always there. Waking up, the driver’s seat was empty; his suit jacket covered you, smelling of night frost. It was 4:45 AM, moon still up, outside a beach.
You got out; the air was warm. He leaned on the railing, sleeves rolled up, shirt and tie fluttering. “Leaning on the rail, his features are a poem of three hundred lines.” You stood by the car, not approaching, enjoying the breeze. Until dawn broke, clouds rolling, bright colors surging—yellow, orange-red, the sea golden. Backlit, he lowered his eyes, his gaze full of affection, the wind, the rising sun. “Li Zeyan!” You waved, running forward, stepping through the sunrise’s shadow, driven by instinct. The broken shadows merged, stretching long. I run to you, as the sun is about to rise.
“I might stay here watching the view for a long time.” “It’s okay, my car is by the road.”
Author’s note: I’ve wanted to write a sunrise chapter for a long time, but couldn’t get it right. Recently anxious, I woke at dawn and was震撼. I wanted to share that feeling, so this story was born. Running to light is instinct! May we all be light, wearing the sun~
